OPPORTUNITY FOR STUDENTS

in or considering taking classes through

THE PSYCHOANALYTIC EDUCATION CENTER OF THE CAROLINAS

THE DAVID RAFT FELLOWSHIP

Created by the North Carolina Psychoanalytic Foundation through a generous gift from Elizabeth Raft, MD, the forth David Raft Fellowship will be awarded in summer 2010 to one student or trainee enrolled in or planning to enroll in the Psychoanalytic Education Center of the Carolinas.  The David Raft Fellowship will provide up to $1,250 to help defray the costs of tuition.

Selection Criteria

Preference will be given to eligible applicants who demonstrate one or more of the following qualities:

1)    Demonstrated interest in and/or commitment to the application of psychoanalytic principles to any area of clinical care.

2)    Commitment to developing oneself as an analytic instrument by deepening one's knowledge and understanding of one's own inner processes and learning to apply those lessons in the therapeutic relationship.

3)    Interest in developing a research project that explores psychoanalytic concepts and/or guides psychoanalytic practice.

Priority will be given to applicants who have matriculated or plan to matriculate in either the PECC, although students who plan to take courses without matriculating may also apply and be considered for the Raft Fellowship.

Eligibility And APPLICATION PROCESS

  • Mental health professionals and trainees who are matriculated students in the Psychoanalytic Education Center of the Carolinas are eligible to be considered for the David Raft Fellowship. To be considered for the fellowship, matriculated students should submit an abbreviated Raft Fellowship application by May 17.
  • Mental health professionals and trainees who have applied to the Psychoanalytic Education Center of the Carolinas (PECC) certificate programs can apply for the David Raft Fellowship by submitting an abbreviated Raft Fellowship application by May 17.
  • Non-matriculated mental health professionals and trainees who are interested in applying for one or more of the PECC's 2010-2011 open courses can apply for the David Raft Fellowship by submitting the Raft Fellowship application by May 17. There is a place on the application form to indicate the name of the course you would like to take so you don't need to complete a separate course application.

To apply for training programs and courses or to receive a Raft application, contact Sarah Tillis, LCSW at admin@ncanalysis.org.

All materials and application information will be kept confidential.

 2010-2011 DEADLINE: May 17, 2010

 Selection Process

The Raft Fellowship selection committee will consist of three members (and two alternates) of the NC Psychoanalytic Society.

The selection committee will consider all students applying to and/or matriculated in the Society's educational programs.  Students who plan to take courses without matriculating may also apply to be considered for the Raft Fellowship.

The selection committee may use application materials and any additional information it deems necessary, in its sole discretion, such as soliciting additional information, essays or interviews in order to reach its decision. The decision of the selection committee will be final.

The Raft Fellowship recipient will be announced in summer 2010.

David Raft, MD (1930 - 1985)

Dr. David Raft, a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, was a committed researcher, clinician and teacher.  As Associate Professor in the University of North Carolina School of Medicine Department of Psychiatry, he taught on the consult/liaison service.  He also taught and supervised in the Psychoanalytic Institute of the Carolinas (then known as the UNC-Duke Psychoanalytic Education Program).

Equally comfortable with internal medicine, psychopharmacology and psychoanalysis or a combination of those he could and would respond to emergencies with the same generosity and excellence he showed in providing psychoanalytic supervision. Dr. Raft wrote on diverse topics including depression in medical patients, anorexia nervosa, sexual problems, psychopharmacological prescribing by non-psychiatrists, somatization, and therapeutic abortion.

Dr. Raft's real love was teaching, supervising and conducting psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy. Those he supervised and mentored remember him as a dedicated teacher of the craft. The Raft Fellowship will provide financial support in order to share his professional values with new generations of students and psychoanalysts.
