NCPF Annual Public Lectures

The North Carolina Psychoanalytic Foundation hosts an annual lecture for the general public on a mental health topic of broad interest.

Past Annual Lectures

In 2008, distinguished speaker Salman Akhtar, MD, presented From Delight to Wisdom: Traveling the Path to Mental Health, in which he illuminated illuminate the dynamic tensions of the sane existence and the spiritual and psychological challenges of living in our often ambiguous and constantly changing world.

In 2007, the NCPF presented Keeping a Child's Mind in Mind: Prevention and Treatment of Psychological Problems Based in Early Childhood with distinguished speaker Peter Fonagy, PhD, FBA. Professor Fonagy presented a workshop for mental health professionals on Treating Borderline Personality Disorder and a lecture for the public on Helping Children Develop Secure Relationships.  Check back soon for information on purchasing audiotapes of these presentations. The 2006 Annual Public Lecture Series featured celebrated writer Judith Viorst, who spoke with honesty, humanity and humor about the joys and sorrows of Parenting Our Children from Newborn to Thirty Years Old and Beyond and Grown-Up Marriage - what we know, wish we had known, and still need to know about being married. In 2005, the NCPF hosted distinguished speaker and writer Dr. Susie Orbach who presented Change Your Eating, Change Your Life: Transforming Your Emotional Relationship With Food, discussing the ways in which food can be used to meet emotional needs and presenting a practical set of techniques to learn to eat when we are hungry, stop when are we full, and become aware of ways to meet our emotional needs directly. At our Second Annual Public Lecture, on March 1, 2003, psychoanalyst Elio Frattaroli, MD, spoke to an audience of nearly 300 on Healing The Soul: Why Medication For Anxiety and Depression is Not Enough. The text of Dr. Frattaroli's lecture, Healing the Soul, is now available on this website.
