About
The Speaker
The Foundation is pleased to present Dr. Elio Frattaroli, a provocative
lecturer and acclaimed writer for professionals and the general public.
Educated at Harvard and at the University of Chicago, Dr. Frattaroli is
Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania
and a practicing psychoanalyst in Philadelphia.
About
The Program
In his writings and talks, Dr. Frattaroli explores strategies for solving
life problems that go beyond treating symptoms to healing the soul:
- Healing the soul - not medicating the brain - is the root meaning
and true purpose of psychiatry. Medication can be tremendously helpful
in reducing painful symptoms, but cannot take the place of a thoughtful
inquiry into our state of mind and life situation.
- Many of us have been brought up to believe we should be happy all
the time. We consider disturbing emotions abnormal and our automatic
reaction is to look for a quick fix to get rid of the pain. But in doing
so, we lose an important opportunity for personal growth, an opportunity
to learn what our painful feelings can tell us about ourselves.
- Anxiety and depression can promote healing by interfering with self-defeating
or inauthentic patterns of behavior, pointing to what is out of balance
in our lives, and forcing us to pay attention to thoughts and feelings
we might otherwise prefer to ignore.
- Experiencing difficult emotions - anger, fear, grief, jealousy, anxiety
and depression - is part of being human. A cornerstone of emotional
health is the capacity to bear painful feelings while we try to understand
their meaning. No one is born with this capacity -- it is learned in
the context of empathic human relationships.
- Healing-making whole the divided self-comes through experiencing,
accepting, and taking responsibility for the dark side of ourselves.
Dr. Frattaroli will describe how this transformation can occur during
psychotherapy, an inward journey of self-discovery in which we allow
ourselves to feel what we really feel and so become who we truly are.
