PROGRAMS FOR THERAPISTS
North Carolina, particularly the Triangle area, is rich in psychoanalytic resources, with programs ranging from free lectures and short courses to full psychoanalytic training. Mental health professionals and trainees use these programs to deepen their skills in intensive psychotherapy or psychoanalysis and to supplement their prior professional education. To receive invitations to psychoanalytic programs, please email info@ncpsychoanalysis.org.
LECTURES, SHORT COURSES AND CONFERENCES
Peter Fonagy and Marsha
Linehan to speak on treatments for borderline personality disorder On Saturday, April 25, 2009, the NCPF and
the UNC
School of Social Work will bring
together Professors Peter Fonagy and Marsha Linehan for a full-day
program on treating patients with borderline personality disorder. Both Drs.
Linehan and Fonagy have spent years developing techniques to help their patients
manage their feelings, behaviors, and relationships in ways that decrease their
self-destructive tendencies and increase their capacities to love and to work.
We invite you to spend a day with these two
seasoned clinicians, researchers, and accomplished lecturers. You will learn
about:
- Professor Fonagy's mentalization-based
therapy (MBT) which, based on psychoanalytic principles of perceiving and
interpreting intentional mental states, promotes change by helping individuals
to deepen their sense of "self" and their empathy for others.
- Professor Linehan's dialectical behavioral
therapy (DBT) which, based on "mindfulness" and the linkage of acceptance and
change, provides specific cognitive and behavioral strategies for improving
interpersonal relationships and gaining greater control over emotional
responses.
