Introductory Course (IC) in Psychoanalytic Theory and Technique

PPSC/NC These award-winning teachers provide a solid foundation to basic and intermediate psychoanalytic concepts including: "listening with the third ear", empathy, interventions, transference, counter-transference, diagnosis and psychological defenses. Stimulating class readings introduce student to clinical ideas of some of the most creative psychoanalytic thinkers and practitioners including Freud, Ferenczi, Winnicott, Mahler, Gabbard, Fromm-Reichman, Sullivan, Bettelheim, and Kohut. Advanced Curriculum in Psychoanalytic Theory and Technique (AC)
PPSC/NC Two-year intensive course of weekly classes open to licensed mental health professionals. Class provides solid foundation in the theory and practice of psychoanalytic psychotherapy. Sections of this course are taught by members of the NC Psychoanalytic Society and coordinated by Rebecca Goz, PhD. The Child and Adolescent Course
PPSC/NC A one-year course in psychoanalytic psychotherapy with children and adolescents taught by a multi-disciplinary team of analysts and psychoanalytic therapists with expertise in the area of child and adolescent development. It is expected that students will have completed a degree program in a mental health-related field, that they will be already licensed in their appropriate fields, and that they have a familiarity with the concepts covered in the PPSC's Introductory Course. Psychoanalytic Perspectives
Nancy Livingston, MD, Instructor. PIC This course offers an overview of psychoanalytic perspectives as first presented by Sigmund Freud and then developed and modified by later investigators. Key theoretical controversies, emphases, and deficiencies which spurred development of various "schools" of psychoanalysis will be discussed. We will explore the history of psychoanalysis in a broad cultural context and as influenced by the personalities of major figures in the field. Basic contemporary, cutting edge research questions and points of divergence and convergence among theoreticians will offer perspectives on developing trends in psychoanalysis. Enrollment will be limited to 15 students; a minimum enrollment of 5 will be necessary for the course to be offered. CME and CE credits will be available. Psychoanalysis: an Interdisciplinary Approach Study Group
(Previously known as Neuro-psychoanalysis Study Group)
David Moore, PhD, and Laurie Pahel, MD, facilitators. NCPS Monthly study group for mental health professionals and neuroscientists. New members welcome. This group will focus on Psychoanalysis (an interdisciplinary approach) including and building on past neuroscience readings, but branching out to literature, attachment theory, philosophy and theology. The main text for the year will be Peter Fonagy et. al. (2002) Affect Regulation, Mentalization and the Development of the Self. This book integrates psychoanalysis with attachment theory (giving psychoanalysis empirical support), neuroscience (Damasio), extensive clinical material and philosophy in an interdisciplinary manner. Directions To LDF and LDCEC
Lucy Daniels Foundation (LDF) is located at 9001 Weston Parkway in Cary, NC. The Lucy Daniels Center for Early Childhood (LDCEC) is located in an adjoining building at 9003 Weston Parkway in Cary, NC.
From I-40, Take exit 287, Cary/Harrison Avenue. Proceed towards Cary on Harrison Avenue, approximately one-half mile. Turn right onto Weston Parkway and travel for 1.5 miles. The LDF is across the median on your left. Continue driving another 0.1 mile and make a U-turn in the median break. You may park alongside the building and in the upper parking lot. The LDF is in the first building on your right as you enter the parking lot, while the LDCEC is at the far end of the parking lot.
