Distinguished Speaker

Jonathan Shay, MD, PhD

About The Speaker

The North Carolina Psychoanalytic Foundation is pleased to present Dr. Jonathan Shay, a provocative and celebrated speaker and writer for professionals and the general public.  Educated at Harvard and the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Shay is a psychiatrist for the United States Department of Veterans Affairs in Boston.  A self-proclaimed "missionary" on behalf of the veterans he serves, Dr. Shay's only patients for more than 15 years have been combat veterans with severe and chronic psychological injuries.

About the Lecture

Jonathan Shay, MD, PhD, is the critically acclaimed author of Achilles in Vietnam: Combat Trauma and the Undoing of Character and Odysseus in America: Combat Trauma and the Trials of Homecoming (with joint Foreword by Senators John McCain and Max Cleland).  In this lecture, Dr. Shay will illuminate the nature of catastrophic war experiences and the spiritual and psychological obstacles combat veterans face in returning to civilian life.  Participants will learn family and community approaches to assisting the returning veteran and hear his practical call for prevention of psychological and moral injury in military service.

On March 6, 2004, Dr. Shay will also be leading a five-hour continuing education workshop for mental health professionals.  For more information, read Home From The War: Workshop.
